The Hotel Casa Morey and its past with Iquitos

The Hotel Casa Morey is a historical monument in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon. Located on the banks of the Itaya River in the city of Iquitos, this boutique hotel offers a throwback atmosphere in spacious accommodations and personalized service. Built by the opulent rubber baron, Luis Morey in 1913, Hotel Casa Morey has been restored to its Victorian splendor with Amazonian ornaments.

In 1910 Luis F. Morey was one of the richest rubber barons in Iquitos, owner of many steamboats to transport the valuable rubber balls. His mansion was built adjacent to the docks, which would later be converted into the pleasant Plaza de Ramón Castilla. AmazonEco has restored this mansion in an effort to return this corner of Iquitos to its former elegance.

In addition to the Morey House, Amazon Eco has restored some steamboats from the period of the rubber heyday in the Amazon. For more information please see The Historic Ship Museum. The restoration of the Casa Morey Hotel and the historic ships have been carried out with the dedication and passion of Dr. Richard Bodmer and his wife Tula Fang to save the culture of this era of the past in the city of Iquitos.
